newlyweds at the bonfire
feeding their vows into its crackling maw
woodsmoke and barbecue and the pop of distant fireworks
and corndogs for one and all
twenty feet away, the shadowed shore
against sky as black as sea
father neptune a world away and more
but the lake still swallows a wretch like me
